Apple Filed For Game Controller Accessory Patent

A recent patent filing by Apple reveals the possibility of a game controller accessory for the iPhone or iPod Touch. The accessory could theoretically make it easier to play games on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Physical buttons are the only thing that are really holding some of the popular iPhone games back from directly competing with Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in my opinion. Many games work well with the touch controls approach, but some games would benefit from physical button controls.  Could this be the answer to crush the competition?

From the looks of the patent application and image, the game pad accessory seems to have an articulated dock connector that you slide the device into and then down into the recessed holder. No dimensions are given, one has to wonder what the size of the accessory will be. Let’s hope it’s slim and functional.

The patent was originally submitted in, September of 2008 and was accepted April 1st 2010.

I think you are. Personally I’d like to see a 4 button control with a D-pad. Maybe two shoulder buttons as well, but not necessary. They need to make it as much like the competition as possible if they plan to swoon in PSP and DS owners.
